Description
The DominoDisk is a micro-SD backed “hard disk drive” for the Apple II.
Its main feature is its daisy-chaining port, meaning that you can plug another storage device after it. It aims at being a simple hard disk, and comes with a period-correct set of features (store and access data, let the user use their external floppy drives in conjunction with itself).
Its form-factor, however, is definitely not period-correct, providing 128MB of storage in a 46x46mm footprint. It aims at being almost invisible in your setup, be it behind an Apple //c, IIgs or floppy drive.
The device is unobtrusive. The microSD card can be removed and inserted without unplugging the device from the computer (but not when the computer is on!) on both Apple //c and IIgs. It is short enough that you can still have your Apple //c sit under the Monitor stand.
You can read more about this device on its sibling’s (the BurgerDisk) project page. You can also browse the firmware code, PCB design and schematics, and enclosure STL files in the BurgerDisk git repository. It is free software and open-hardware.
Compatibility
It is fully compatible with:
- Apple //c (ROM0 or later) – tested with ROM3 A2S4000 and ROM4x A2S4100,
- Apple IIgs – tested on ROM1
- Apple //c+
- the original Liron card
- the Liron Reborn
It is somewhat compatible with:
- the SoftSP cards (GrapplerMinus, a2pico, …). Chaining an Unidisk 3.5″ to a DominoDisk results in read errors on the 3.5″ floppy. Chaining a Disk//c to a DominoDisk works correctly, but the motor of the 5.25″ sometimes gets enabled during I/O access on the DominoDisk.
